Moving with Children

Children are a major consideration for any family relocating.  The more planning that can be done in advance, the easier it will be for children to adapt to the big changes they are about to face.

It is important to explain to each child at their own level of understanding why you are moving and how each of them can prepare for the big move, e.g. packing their own suitcase or putting aside some of their favourite things to occupy them in the car or on the plane.   Encourage them to express their feelings about the move – even if their initial thoughts about it seem negative.  It is completely natural for children of any age to have misgivings about leaving their home, other family members, their school and their friends.  Starting over in a new city can seem daunting.

If you have pets and are taking them with you, your children may worry about that. We  have had plenty of experience helping families move with their pets. Click here to find out more.

To alleviate some of the anxiety, try to get as much information as you can about the new destination location, including places of interest for the children and local housing and schooling options.  The internet is a great resource and the whole family can take part in researching what is available.   This will give the children an opportunity to contribute to the move plans and feel more involved in the relocation process overall.

In order to keep in touch with family and friends ‘back home’, you could also look at the possibility of downloading SKYPE http://www.skype.com onto your home computer.  At the same time you may wish to consider setting other relatives up on the internet (if they don’t already have access) so they too can keep in touch with the family.
